We chose our business name from our idea to plant the daylilies by color, so the growing fields would look like a patchwork quilt when viewed from the air.  As we developed our plans further, we designated 10 acres bordering State Road 3 for the nursery and planned for 40 by 40 foot patches separated by 20 foot wide grass borders to allow us to easily move equipment around.

In October 2003 we filed all the legal papers to become an LLC and in November our John Deere tractor was delivered.  Early in the spring of 2004, we rototilled the entire 10 acre field and planted a cover crop of oats, perennial rye grass and ladino clover.

Since we wanted to be entirely organic, we felt this cover crop would begin to restore the quality of the soil that had been abused by chemical farming for so many years.  Ladino clover (a legume) puts down 75-150 lbs of nitrogen per acre each year, plus the roots reach fairly deep into the subsoil to bring up other nutrients.
